The Language Center of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) organized an Academic Workshop for the preparation of FLSP (Foreign Language for Specific Purposes) in the 2025/2026 academic year on Monday, August 25, 2025. The event was attended by the Director of the Language Center, FLSP instructors, and a UMM Vice Rector 1.

The workshop aimed to provide training as well as space for collaboration among instructors in designing the updated FLSP curriculum. During the session, FLSP teams presented their new teaching plans and exchanged feedback to strengthen the learning materials. FLSP has become one of UMM’s featured programs, providing students with a one-year foreign language course.

This year, the program introduces several updates. The PPBA (Program Pengembangan Bahasa Arab) Laboratory led by Dr. Muhammad Fadli Ramadhan, M.Pd. has officially joined the program, along with plans to add more foreign language courses. Therefore, UMM students will have more options for foreign language learning beyond English, Mandarin, and Japanese.

In his remarks, Director of the Language Center Dr. Masduki, M. Pd. emphasized the importance of this curriculum transformation. While previous teaching was more on knowledge-based teaching focuses on theoretical approaches, the new curriculum will be skill-based, highlighting the measurable and practical language skills. “Teaching must be tangible and operational. For example, writing courses should produce real outputs, and speaking courses should result in applicable communication skills,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Vice Rector  1, Prof. Akhsanul In’am, Ph.D. highlighted that although the previous curriculum was already good, continuous changes are necessary. He also underlined the diverse backgrounds of UMM students and the importance of adopting natural learning models. “The goal of this program is to nurture talented students who can be further developed and even supported to continue their studies abroad,” he stated.

Through this workshop, the Language Center UMM expects the new FLSP curriculum to be easier to implement, deliver real impact, and create a strong distinction for UMM graduates both nationally and internationally. (ns)
